DNR fisheries crews stocked the Vermillion River in Farmington with more than 3,500 rainbow trout earlier this week in preparation for the stream trout opener on Saturday, April 17. The half-pound rainbows came from the DNR hatchery in Lanesboro. Additional stockings are planned for later this spring as part of ongoing efforts to provide quality, close-to-home angling opportunities for Twin Cities metro residents. At DNR, spring and summer are devoted to raising the newest crop of baby muskies for the state’s stocking program. And it all begins at Lake Rebecca, our muskie broodstock lake in western Hennepin County. Fisheries staff are out, rain, shine, or snow, monitoring the fish to begin collecting 700,000 eggs as soon as the female muskies are ready to spawn.
